Bridge

Description
The bridge must be made of solid wood and built safely for both horse and rider, with a non-slip surface. It may be flat, arched, or slightly raised.

Recommended dimensions:

• Minimum width: 5 ft

• Minimum length: 13 ft

• Minimum height: 8 in

Side rails are optional. If used, they must be easy to remove without tools for safety. Rails should be between 3–4 ft high.

Entry and exit markers are required to show where the obstacle begins and ends.

How It’s Performed

• The bridge must be crossed at a walk in the Ease of Handling phase at all levels.

• The horse must transition to walk before entering the markers.

• After exiting the bridge, the horse may transition to canter (or trot for Level 1).

• The bridge may be crossed in both directions if another obstacle is completed in between.

What Judges Look For
Judges score:

• Smooth transitions into and out of the walk

• Consistent, forward, and relaxed walk

• Straightness over the bridge

• Confidence of both horse and rider

Higher scores are given for a longer, more relaxed walk with good use of the horse’s neck.

Faults & Penalties
Points will be deducted for:

• Hesitation, awkwardness, or irregular steps

• Poor transitions or rhythm changes

Serious mistakes include:

• Not performing the obstacle at a walk

• Stepping off the bridge

• Damaging the obstacle

• Strong resistance or refusal
