Working Equitation Florida

Licensed Officials Pathway - Mentoring & Education for Aspiring WE Judges and TDs

Important: WEFL is an independent Affiliate Organization focused on education and opportunities. WEFL does not license, certify, or accredit judges or technical delegates. All official licensing for USA Working Equitation (USAWE) judges and TDs is administered solely by USAWE through its Licensed Officials Program at USAWE.org. Our Pathway exists to help you understand that process and build the knowledge and experience you’ll need to pursue it if you choose

Right now, Florida has a vacuum of licensed officials. That makes it harder and more expensive to run schooling shows and almost impossible to build a full calendar of licensed competitions without flying people in.

If you’ve ever thought “someone should fix that,” this pathway is for you!

Fill out the form below and let us know you are interested!

What this pathway offers

The WEFL Licensed Officials Pathway is not a replacement for USAWE’s Licensed Officials Program—it’s an educational, mentored on‑ramp to it.

As a Pathway participant, you can expect:

  • Mentoring to understand the official USAWE requirements and map out your personal plan (seminars, applications, shadow‑judging, TD experience).
  • Help finding real‑world opportunities to scribe, volunteer, and shadow at WEFL‑supported clinics, schooling shows, and other events in Florida.
  • Priority consideration for local shadow‑judging and observer roles at WEFL‑supported schooling shows.
  • Early access to information about upcoming official USAWE seminars and judge/TD education opportunities, including those hosted in Florida or nearby.
  • A study group and peer community to keep you accountable for reading the rulebook, completing required forms, and building practical skills.

WEFL does not grant any official judge or TD status. Only USAWE may license judges or technical delegates. Participation in this Pathway does not guarantee licensing or approval by USAWE or any other organization.

WEFL does not pay your USAWE or USDF program fees—but we do everything we can to make the path clearer, closer to home, and more rewarding.

Who we’re looking for

You may be a great fit if you are:

  • A trainer, clinician, or serious rider who wants to turn your WE knowledge into a professional service as a judge or TD.

  • An experienced show volunteer, scribe, or organizer who loves rules, details, and good sport.

  • Someone who wants a side career in Working Equitation with real responsibility and paid assignments at shows once you’re licensed.

We are especially interested in candidates willing to pursue both Learner “L” Judge and Technical Delegate licenses, because the rule knowledge overlaps and it doubles your opportunities to work.

What you’ll need to invest

This Pathway is for people who are ready to put some skin in the game—and who understand that individual show managers, not WEFL, make all official hiring decisions. WEFL’s role is to educate, mentor, and advocate for qualified candidates by connecting them with real‑world opportunities.

Pathway participants are expected to:

  • Maintain current WEFL membership and, when applicable, current USAWE membership.

  • Commit time and travel for required seminars, shadow‑judging, scribing, and TD experiences hosted by WEFL‑supported and other shows.

  • Complete USAWE applications, tests, and documentation on their own; WEFL can provide guidance and reminders, but cannot submit or approve anything on USAWE’s behalf.

  • Keep up with USAWE rules updates and best‑practice materials so they stay aligned with the official Licensed Officials Program.

As you build experience and demonstrate competency (for example, through rulebook study, successful shadow‑judging, and positive feedback from licensed officials), WEFL will advocate for you and help introduce you to show managers who are looking for judges, scribes, and TDs for schooling shows and, when appropriate, licensed competitions. Those show managers decide whom to hire; our job is to help them see who’s prepared.
